ABOUT THE MANOR HOUSE

Past, Present, and Future

Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd, along with its coach house and park, is one of the most remarkable National Monuments in the Netherlands. It is located in the heart of the Amelisweerd and Rhijnauwen estates, just a stone’s throw from the city of Utrecht. Because the country house has never been intensively inhabited, many original elements have been preserved. A famous example is the unique hand-painted Chinese wallpaper from the 18th century. Today, you can visit exhibitions in the fields of art, science, and history.

CHANGING EXHIBITIONS

Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd provides space for individual creators and organizations from Utrecht to present changing exhibitions and programs for a diverse audience. The retreat offers space for contemporary art, showcases its rich history, and gives creators the opportunity to create and be inspired.
The manor house is open annually from April through November and closes during the winter months. For current opening hours, visit the website landhuisoudamelisweerd.nl.
In 2024, the country house is open from March 23 to October 27, 2024.

HISTORY

The country house was built in 1770 as a summer house, commissioned by Gerard Godard Taets van Amerongen. He had a bridge built over the Kromme Rijn and restructured the estate into the current park. The later history surrounding the various owners is too rich to summarize in a few lines: from King Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, the Bosch van Drakestein family to the Municipality of Utrecht since 1951. The layout, floors, doors, and ceilings have remained unchanged since 1770. This originality, along with the remaining 18th and 19th-century Chinese and Dutch wallpaper, makes this house very special as a heritage site.
