Set within Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd, Utrecht’s historic landmark, The past lingers, the present haunts serves as a meeting point for seven artists united in their contemplations on the in-between. Through sculptural interpretations, these artists give shape to the elusive forms of life found in the cracks between personal identities, practices of green colonialism, broken healthcare systems, as well as in the distant but inevitable symbiosis between humans and technology. Six contemporary works, scattered throughout Amelisweerd’s historic chambers dating back more than two centuries, stand assertively in the gaps between past and present, embracing a transitory state and proposing that perhaps we might remain there just a little longer.
What would happen if we were to encounter the entities of the in-between with our whole being, actively resisting the urge to reduce them to categories and instead forming mutual relationships characterized by presence and directness? What forms of shared understanding might arise when we begin to see the in-between as an offering of radical change and becoming?
